ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES. FUNDAMENTOS DE LITERATURA NORTEAMERICANA
The aim of this course is to provide a literary and cultural text-based survey and discussion of American outstanding texts until the end of the nineteenth-century, whether printed or audio-visual ones. Students are therefore expected to fulfil all of the following requirements, so that final grading will result from a final exam plus the grading of tasks scheduled and completed along the semester.
1.- REGULAR CLASS ATTENDANCE is crucial for a optimum assimilation of contents, so student attendance to class and ACTIVE PARTICIPATION in class discussions and activities will be checked and assessed every session.
2.- Since classes will be held in English, students are expected to be able to understand and express themselves in this language.
3.- They are as well requested to bring daily to class the teaching materials provided at the beginning or during the term, and thoroughly encouraged to read—and compelled to read and work on the texts for seminar commentary—prior to class-sessions.
4.- Seminar discussions, which are compulsory, will therefore draw on the assigned texts from the teaching materials or any other activity proposed by the teacher. Students are requested to meet the deadline for submission of assigned activities, especially tasks scheduled in Aula Virtual. As a general rule, no extensions will be allowed for scheduled activities—if you fail to meet the deadline on time your work will not be marked and your “evaluación continua” may be compromised. In any case, if you think you are unable to meet the deadline, contact the teacher beforehand.
4.- GRADING AND FINAL ASSESMENT will be based on
a. active participation in seminar discussions. In order to do so, students are requested to prepare the texts assigned for seminars and research and discuss in class sessions the questions provided. This will make 10% of the student’s final grade.
b. students are requested to prepare two five-to-seven-minute oral presentations on the texts assigned for class debates as well as ONE SEMINAR PAPER, meant to be scheduled and posted beforehand in AULA VIRTUAL. Grading will thus take into consideration both the uploaded ideas and performance in class. This will make another 50% of the student’s final grade.
c. Objective test drawing on the materials discussed in class activities and seminars, making 40% of the student’s final grade.
5. PAPER SUBMISSION. Scheduled activities for paper submission will observe the following directions. They must be uploaded to AULA VIRTUAL prior to the scheduled date (see TAREAS). If not specified otherwise, extension will be 500 to 600 words approximately, and will necessarily answer the questions and considerations suggested. Comments and ideas will be based on personal-critical reflections and textual analysis (IN NO CASE ON PERSONAL OPINIONS); if bibliographic support (print and on-line sources) is highly recommended, no “cut and paste” will be allowed. PAPERS WILL ON ANY ACCOUNT BE INDIVIDUAL WORKS.
6. STUDENTS ARE REQUESTED TO REGISTER IN AULA VIRTUAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (INCLUDING PHOTOGRAPH), NO LATER THAN TWO WEEKS AFTER TEACHING STARTS IN ANY CASE.
